I was initially reticent about taking out a policy and as a young man, I couldn’t see its value, in addition to private health care and life insurance. Last year, I was diagnosed with cancer. I recall asking myself “How on earth can I get this? I’m fit, healthy, under 50, I regularly exercise and have never smoked”. I had 6 months of chemotherapy with many side effects, in particular tiredness. I did manage to keep working, although often at home or with reduced hours.

I am now in remission and will continue to fight this disease. However, the critical illness payout has given me a degree of financial comfort that has been extremely welcome. In the middle of the treatment, the last thing I wanted to do was worry about my financial situation if I was unable to work.
